It all comes back to the breath.
The principles that I've learned through my yoga study parallel my creative process in a multitude of ways. The energy is the same. When I create, I am essentially in the same flow. Using the breath. Moving with whatever comes up.
I've become aware more recently of how this is reflected in how I shoot and direct. It's exactly as I teach a yoga class. Often on set I will create different body awareness in my actors – and mental awareness – helping them discover their character in a new way. How they move, how they breathe – it all comes into play. Even when taking photos I often find myself consciously sitting back, awaiting the moment to arrive without grasping for it. Hitting the shutter in that precise moment, it can feel like a meditation.
Using the body, the breath and an aligned mind in such a way makes you a better artist. You can sit within while actively creating. You can clearly channel your deepest voice. And this is the magic of creation and telling stories. Weaving these intricacies through the art elevates the experience and the result. When you collaborate with a team who are receptive and want that vibe too – the ultimate.
