A technique in writing. Taking actual pen to actual paper. Allowing yourself a chance to write without any expectation. I use this practice in my creative labs and some meditation classes. I've seen major transformations move at the speed of light. And I think this technique can do wonders for the artist. The rules are simple.
No critiquing of any kind. No proper sentence structure. Zero plot or point. Simply write. Write everything that comes to mind. Aim for a minimum of 3 full pages.
In The Artist's Way, a beautiful guide to removing creative blocks, author Julia Cameron refers to this exercise as "brain drain." And it does just that. Clears your mind in the best of ways.
I find after a meditation session when the mind is already very still this ritual can have even deeper and more intense clearings and reveals. It is advised to not read your writing back immediately. Give it time to be released. Set your thoughts free.
Come back when you're ready.
